Sarah Beeny Sells Rise Hall After Major Restoration Project

TV property expert Sarah Beeny famously bought derelict mansion Rise Hall in 2001, and after 18 years of major renovation work to the historic building, she has decided to sell the “restoration nightmare”.

Beeny, who became well known for presenting Channel 4’s Property Ladder, bought the decrepit Grade II listed property near Hull with her husband Graham Swift, after he fell in love with it.

It has taken a lot of work to update it, repairing countless problems with the structure, including removing woodworm in every room, reported The Yorkshire Post.

They purchased the mansion, which had been deserted for more than ten years, for £435,000, and have spent a considerable sum on repairs and first class interior design.

The couple poured all their energy into giving the Yorkshire home a new lease of life and ensuring the original character of the mansion – which was built between 1815 and 1820 for the High Sheriff of Yorkshire Richard Bethell – could be restored.

Among the tasks they undertook were fixing 149 rotting windows and amending an acre of leaking roof.

Having completely refurbished the impressive structure, they turned it into a wedding venue, as well as a family home for themselves and their four sons.

However, Beeny and her artist husband are planning to sell the 97-room home, as they are relocating from London to Somerset to be closer to relatives.

Speaking with the newspaper, Beeny said: “Somerset is a long way from Rise, even further than London was, and we have the new project so we thought the time was right to sell.”

The couple have sold Rise Hall to Dan and Helen Gill of Dine, who also look after other historic buildings in Yorkshire, including The Mansion in Leeds’ Roundhay Park and Malton’s Howsham Hall.

You might not have a restoration project on the same scale as Beeny’s, but if your house suffers from woodworm too, get in touch with damp proofing experts in Middlesex today to fix the problem for you.
