Living in damp accommodation can have serious health implications, particularly for young children and pregnant ladies. That is why expectant mother Helen McGreavy is furious with her local council for doing nothing about the mould in her house, despite making several complaints.
The York Press reported that the 27-year-old, along with her 26-year-old partner Jack Pycroft, were assured City of York Council would reduce the damp in their home by the start of 2019.
However, the couple are worried about the health of their unborn child, as they say the damp and mould is still present.
Speaking with the news provider, Ms McGreavy stated: “My midwife said that the damp could be a serious health hazard for the baby if it is not removed.”
“The damp is still here and I am due next week,” she went on to say, adding: “We have just decorated the room for her arrival, but while there is still damp in her bedroom, I don’t want her sleeping in there.”
The tenant said the local authority were first informed of the damp problems when she moved in last September, and had put up scaffolding before Christmas, but failed to remove the excess moisture in the home.
However, head of building services at the council Mike Gilsenan has said the local authority has been working closely with the couple to resolve the problems.
This includes finding a leak, carrying out repairs to the roof and brickwork, providing a dehumidifier, and installing extractor fans in the kitchen and bathroom, as well as issuing guidance on how to use heating and ventilation to reduce condensation.
Condensation is a big problem during the colder months due to the variation in temperature from outside to indoors. Some ways to reduce the build-up of moisture include opening windows when cooking or having a shower, draught proofing the property, as well as installing insulation in the loft and cavity walls.
