A Guide To Tackling Condensation In Your Home

February 15, 2019

If you’ve noticed condensation in your property, such as on window panes or maybe tiled walls, you need to make sure you do something about it.

This is a major cause of dampness and it can affect any property in the UK. Its effects are often most noticeable during the winter months, because the extremes in temperature mean water vapour is more likely to manifest as condensation and mould.

In the winter, windows are also more likely to be shut impeding ventilation, while people are more likely to dry clothes over radiators, for instance, which is a major cause of humidity in homes. It is imperative that a clothes drying machine is used or clothes are dried outside in good weather.

Luckily, there are a few simple steps you can take to reduce the moisture levels in your home and thereby tackle condensation. Adequate ventilation is essential, especially in rooms like the kitchen or bathroom.

Make sure you open windows when you’re cooking or having a shower while keeping the door closed to prevent the water vapour escaping into other parts of your home.

You may also want to consider installing condensation fans if you have a particularly bad issue in any part of your home.

Insulating and draught proofing your home will also help you keep on top of any condensation issues, so explore the likes of loft insulation, secondary glazing, cavity wall insulation and draught proofing around windows and doors.

Another top tip is to avoid using paraffin or flueless bottle gas heaters during the winter months, as these will release large amounts of water into the air and therefore contribute to any condensation issues.

It’s advisable to keep your heating on at a low background level all day too, to prevent your home from becoming exceedingly cold before heating it up again.
