What is Dry Rot? (Serpula Lacrymans)
Dry rot fungus destroys the cellulose in timbers which poses a huge threat to the integrity of the structural timbers in your property and can cause serious safety issues. It is thought of as the most serious type of timber decay as it reduces timber to a dry and crumbly consistency and therefore requires immediate analysis by a qualified surveyor. For fungal decay to begin, it requires water to penetrate, increasing the moisture content to above 22% which allows bacteria and micro fungi to colonise in the wood, resulting in the partial breakdown of the cell structure.
How to identify Dry Rot?
- Distinct mushroom smell
- White mycelium growth (cotton wool like appearance)
- Fruiting body
- Cuboidal cracking
- Red spores may be deposited as a layer of dust around the infected area.
